Premier 10 Minute by Minute Review - 11 May

I’m going to be honest with you here, this tie is not easy to predict. It is not easy to predict at the best of times but even trickier when both teams still have a game to play before this one. I mean if France lose to Holland and Italy lose to Romania, the World Champs will be out but if both win their earlier game then it really is game on! The possibilities may be endless, well almost, but with thousands of pounds up for grabs, it’s still well worth a £1 punt!
Turkey bounced back from their disappointing display against Portugal to clinch a dramatic last gasp win over the Swiss to set up a winner takes all clash with the Czech. Republic. A win for either side would put them into the knock-out stage and after Karel Bruckner’s team’s defeat to the Portuguese it’s the Turks who enter this clash with the greater momentum.
So the co-hosts Switzerland are out of the competition after just 2 games and will definitely finish bottom of their group after a last minute Arda Turan goal for Turkey led to their 2nd defeat of the tournament. Portugal on the other hand are through to the next round and can rest their big guns for this match after 2 straight and convincing wins.
Russia may have lost to Spain on Tuesday but they still earned themselves a minor accolade - they were the first losing side to score in the tournament! A meagre consolation from Zyryanov I know but, on a positive note, at least they found the back of the net; it’s more than some this competition; Pavlyuchenko continued to look dangerous throughout.
The Poles had high hopes for Euro 2008 after an excellent qualifying campaign which saw them win their group ahead of Portugal. However, a convincing 2-0 defeat to tournament favourites Germany has left them with a mountain to climb to beat an excellent Croatia side rightly considered dark horses for the competition.
Euro 2004 winners Greece’s bid to retain their title already looks in tatters after a opening match defeat to Sweden and with Spain yet to play, this is a must win match for Otto Rehhagel’s team. The Russians were tipped by many as dark horses for the competition but a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Spain looks set to leave Guus Hiddink’s title dreams lying in ruins.
Both nations kicked off their Euro 2008 Group D games with wins and look odds on to reach the knock-out stages. However, it was Spain who looked the most impressive in their 4-goal demolition of Russia with Valencia star and top target of much of the Premier League David Villa scoring a hat-trick. This was the first treble by a player in the Euro’s for 8 years since Patrick Kluivert achieved the feat. The fact that Villa’s hat-trick came against a sound defensive outfit in the Russians illustrated why so many clubs are interested in him and why Spain are among the favourites for the competition.
