Bolton travel to Upton Park this weekend aiming to end their London hoodoo after failing to win any of their last 15 Premier League trips to the capital. Unfortunately for Gary Megson he faces a West Ham side growing in confidence under new manager Gianfranco Zola.

Last weekend Bolton’s Kevin Davies was vilified for a challenge on Arsenal’s Gael Clichy in his side’s 3-1 home defeat to the Gunners. The young left-back had to leave the field which left Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger enraged. The Frenchman said, “We have no problem with people being physical when they play us - that is a charming part of the game.

Manchester United will be looking forward to getting back to winning ways in the Premier League and their recent record at Old Trafford against Bolton suggests they will. After all, the Red Devils have won the last five home encounters against the Trotters and scored 4 goals in three of those clashes.

The first Merseyside derby of the season kicks off at Goodison this weekend which brings back many memories for me. Personally I didn’t like playing in these games that much. I think I played in about 32 of them in my time at Liverpool but these were not games I enjoyed at all. The pressure was always so intense, there was not a lot of football played and if you were unfortunate enough to lose then you have to wait a long time till the next derby which makes you suffer all the more.

Bolton’s £10m record summer signing Johan Elmander has been unfortunate to have picked up a hamstring injury in his 2nd appearance for the club. However, early signs are that Gary Megson may have spent wisely after the Swede opened his account on the opening day of the season against Stoke. Since he succumbed to injury the Trotters have failed to win a game so his comeback can’t come too soon.

The Reebok Stadium was once a venue to fear for Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal as Sam Allardyce’s troops harried and outfought his young side on numerous occasions. Unfortunately for Gary Megson the aura surrounding a trip to Bolton seems to no longer faze the young guns who are in top form.Up until the Gunners last trip to the Reebok, Arsenal had suffered 3 consecutive defeats at Bolton and failed to win there in 5 visits. However, a 3-2 win there in March after finding themselves two goals down and playing with ten men for an hour suggests the hoodoo is well and truly broken.

It was a great day for my old club Liverpool on Saturday as they finally ended their poor run against Manchester United. This was significant for a number of reasons namely that not only did the team achieve a great result but they also played well too. Rafa’s team hadn’t played well in their opening 3 games so this was a huge improvement particularly in the second half.

These clubs have not faced each other in two years since the Baggies were last in the Premier League but after a disappointing start to the season, it’s Tony Mowbray’s team that need to get points on the board. Both these clubs were surprisingly knocked out of the Carling Cup in midweek so confidence won’t be high. However, it’s West Brom whose confidence will already be rocked by a 100% losing record in their 3 League and Cup games. Unfortunately, a trip to the Reebok is not usually a good place to visit as Stoke have already found out this season.
