The Premier League transfer race is in full swing now that Euro 2008 has been and gone but still only a small number of signings have been concluded. The latest arrival to the Premier League was Manchester City’s new expensive Brazilian hitman Jo. He became Mark Hughes first signing since taking the reigns at Eastlands and may have solved the club’s striking problems of last season in one swoop.

The Daniel Alves will he, won’t he leave Sevilla saga has finally ended this summer as the Brazilian marauding full-back has joined Barcelona. There’s been no shortage of suitors for the Brazilian international from some of the biggest clubs in the world. But the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have all missed out as the Catalan giants have swooped in a staggering £23.5m deal.

As the money-orientated Premier League continues to invest in big money, big name signings fewer and fewer young players are progressing from the academies into the various first teams. The halcyon period when Manchester United’s ‘golden generation’ of the Neville brothers, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt all progressed into the Red Devils side seems a long time ago with very few kids making the grade since.

Press reports suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson’s number one transfer target is not Dimitar Berbatov as many believed but the £15m rated Colombian striking sensation Radamel Falcao Garcia Zarate or plain Falcao as he’s usually known. The talented 22-year-old currently plies his trade for River Plate in Argentina but may well be playing in the Premier League next season if United get their way.

Reports in the weekend’s press suggest Liverpool are chasing Tottenham’s talismanic Irishman Robbie Keane this summer. The 27-year-old striker has been at Spurs for close to 6 years and has proven himself to be a huge fans favourite. Whereas his strike partner Dimitar Berbatov has been linked away from the club for the past season, this speculation over Keane’s future is a new development and one you’d expect the club not to welcome. After all, of these two forwards I would wager the majority of Spurs fans would prefer to keep their club Vice-Captain rather than the sulky, whinging Bulgarian.
