There are a number of Premier League clubs looking to strengthen their squads with new strikers in January with the likes of Tottenham, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Man City, Chelsea and Everton all in the market. One such target may well be a relative unknown to English fans but who has started to make a name for himself throughout Europe. That played is 20-year-old striker Nikola Kalinic.

This weekend my old team Liverpool face a huge encounter with Manchester United which brings back many great memories for me. When I was a player it wasn’t the Red Devils that were our main rivals as we had numerous big games against those clubs that challenged us for the title at the time such as local rivals Everton, Leeds and Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest. However, matches with Manchester United were still huge affairs.

The Croatians impressed everyone at Euro 2008 with their victories over Austria, Germany and Poland this summer. Most of the plaudits have been focused on Tottenham new-boy Luka Modric. However, there are a number of players who may have caught the eye of including Croatia’s left-sided flying wing raider Danijel Pranjic.

Roy Keane has launched a number of transfer bids this week in an effort to bring in the added quality needed for the Black Cat’s second successive season in the Premier League. Just like neighbours Newcastle, Sunderland have been frustrated by the transfer market this summer with potential signings falling by the wayside including Manchester United’s Jonny Evans and Steaua Bucharest’s Dorin Goian.

Wigan manager Steve Bruce and West Ham manager Alan Curbishley are reportedly leading the race to sign Croatian Euro 2008 striker Ivan Klasnic. The 28-year-old is available on a free transfer after his contract expired at Werder Bremen despite the Bundesliga club’s attempts to keep him.

North London giants Spurs and Arsenal will have both strengthened their squads by signing two of Europe’s top starlets this summer in the shape of Luka Modric and Samir Nasri. Both players already possess plenty of talent but it’s their unlimited potential that should excite their respective fans next season.

The Poles had high hopes for Euro 2008 after an excellent qualifying campaign which saw them win their group ahead of Portugal. However, a convincing 2-0 defeat to tournament favourites Germany has left them with a mountain to climb to beat an excellent Croatia side rightly considered dark horses for the competition.
