If Premier 10 could do a Rivalries Special….
Friday, February 29th, 2008Forget the 39th Premier League game to wet the taste bud of the games international following. Why not sell The New Football Pools rivalry matches - guaranteeing country’s fireworks for their money!
But say we could do a Premier 10 special featuring the top 20 teams and top 10 rivalries, who would your money be on if they played each other right now?
West Bromwich Albion v Wolverhampton Wanderers
Fourth place takes on 10th in this, the fiercest rivalry in the English game. West Brom’s form has taken a severe dip in recent weeks and the Baggies are without a win in their last three. Wolves have strung out a mixed bag of results as of late enjoying wins against Palace and Wednesday but then flaking against Watford and Stoke.
Pundit’s Pick: No Play Off Revenge for Wolves (draw)
Ipswich Town v Norwich
Probably the reason why this rivalry is so intense is because there aren’t any other possible contenders to outdo. Ipswich are having a pretty good time of it at the minute. Despite losing out 1-0 to Stoke in their last match, they are still in contention for the play offs, just 1 point behind in 7th. Norwich though are once again in that infuriating midtable mediocrity having won one, drawn one and lost one in their last three.
Pundit’s Pick: Ipswich may not have city status but they’ve the high flyers in this one (home win)
Liverpool v Manchester United
Some of the rivalries may come as a surprise, others, like this one, leap off the page at you. Liverpool have been waiting for nearly four years for a league victory in this one and given their current league form, it’s going to be half a decade before they do. Even their home status isn’t any saving grace with United enjoying five victories in their last six visits to Anfield. And you just know Rooney will do everything in his natural ability and power to get a goal.
Pundit’s Pick: Liverpool need to buck up their ideas to get something in this classic (away win)
Portsmouth v Southampton
This one looks easy on paper given the fact the two are an ocean apart at the moment; Pompey in 7th in the top flight while Southampton struggling in 19th place in the Championship, just four points clear of the drop zone. But history isn’t all that favourable on Portsmouth. In fact, the Saints are blessed with 4 head to head victories out of the last six as well as having the sacred knowledge that they have never, ever lost a cup match to their rivals.
Pundit’s Pick: Harry’s got the motion of the ocean at Portsmouth (home win)
Cardiff City v Swansea City
It’s another rival pairing that don’t all that often cross paths. In fact, as the report says, it’s been more than eight years since they last met in the league. But when they did it was Swansea who came out top - 2 wins and 2 draws for the last four encounters. Cardiff may be the larger force in the modern game, currently 13th in the Championship compared to Swansea’s League One status but you should never dismiss the strength of a swan especially when they’re flying at the top of their league.
Pundit’s Pick: Forget the league differences; this will be one Welsh delight (draw)
Aston Villa v Birmingham
Thanks to Birmingham’s promotion last season, the sixth fiercest rivalry is once again a Premiership spectacle. Aston Villa have won the last three and now find themselves on a level par with the likes of Liverpool and Everton in the race for fourth. Their rivals though are desperately struggling to put a stop to the league yoyo string they are on. But following that 10-man draw with Arsenal, perhaps the Blues can seize the day.
Pundit’s Pick: Villa’s upper edge continues (home win)
Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday
For a while, Wednesday were quite the Premiership force, all the time their neighbours failed and failed to reach the lofty heights. But the tide changed as Wednesday fell into freefall and United were promoted. Now though both are firmly in football’s second tier flirting with the drop zone. Wednesday enjoyed victory over their local rivals for the first time in January, their first for 5 and a half years.
Pundit’s Pick: A stalemate in the City of Steel (draw)
Bristol City v Bristol Rovers
Both these teams enjoyed promotion last season but without doubt it is City who are having the better of times. One point off the top of the Championship, the Robins are unbeaten in their last four. The Pirates failed early on to find their League One legs but are in decent form, earning 7 points from a possible nine. Throw in this run-in, made all the fiercer by the team’s annual charity match, and anything could happen.
Pundit’s Pick: Rovers make City walk the plank (away win)
Newcastle United v Sunderland
No luck for the Black Cats in this one in recent years. Their last win came in November 2000 but since then Newcastle have won five of their last 8 meetings. Neither team are in particularly good form though this time round. As everyone knows, the Magpies are yet to celebrate a win under Kevin Keegan while haven’t won on the road at all.
Pundit’s Pick: Black Cats claw away at the Magpies (away win)
Brighton v Crystal Palace
Eleventh in League One takes on11th in the Championship in this, a somewhat surprising, club rivalry but only two season’s ago the two found themselves in the same division until Brighton’s demise. Back then it was a win apiece with both teams coming up with the goods away from home. Since then Brighton have failed to launch any bid to reinstate their Championship status and Palace remain in the middle of the pack.
Pundit’s Pick: League difference spells out the result (away win)
Come on Norwich, Liverpool, Southampton, Birmingham, Newcastle and Brighton fans, I’m giving bragging rights to your biggest ever rivals. Surely you’ve got something to say about that!
Purely all hypothetical but if you fancy putting your football knowledge to the test, head on over to this week’s Premier 10 game. It may not have any of these tasty treats but it does include Everton v Portsmouth and Arsenal v Aston Villa
