Transfer News: Arsenal set for a Mexican Wave with Wenger latest young gun
Friday, May 16th, 2008
There’s no rest for Arsene Wenger. After finishing the season without any form of silverware, it’s back to the drawing board for the Frenchman. And his first port of call? 19 year old Mexican striker Carlos Vela.
The young Gunner has been out on loan at Spanish side Osasuna for the entire of the 2007/08 season where he’s made 32 appearances and netted 3 goals. That may not sound all that impressive but the youngster was played out on the left wing instead of as a central striker. Wenger, however, plans to stick him upfront after describing him as “an Eduardo type central striker”.
Vela has also already had three international caps for Mexico making his full international debut against Brazil, scoring his first senior international goal in a friendly against Guatemala and, most recently, starting in Mexico’s 2-2 draw in their friendly with the USA in February.
So what are the feelings out there? Can Arsene Wenger’s ability to nurture the players of tomorrow strike gold again? Or should he be looking for higher profiled, more experienced players to bring instant success to the Emirates?
