West Ham v Aston Villa: The Hammers Destroy Villa’s Hopes for Fifth?

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Even with Martin O’Neill’s words of warning to Everton and David Moyes, there is no denying Villa had a very big slip up right at the wrong time last weekend. Not only did they lose touch with the Toffees, they also lost their goal difference advantage. On the plus side, they now know exactly what they have to do here - produce nothing short of a win.

Tottenham v Liverpool: Reds to Rule Supreme Over Spurs Once More?

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

There was a time when we’d be shocked that these two clubs have only won one trophy between them this season. Alas that is the case with Tottenham likely to finish outside the top 10 for the first time in four years and Liverpool proving lacklustre even in their precious Champions League. So what’s going to spur them on in this final game?

Sunderland v Arsenal: Gunners to End the Season with a Bang?

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

With news that Mathieu Flamini is set for pastures new with the strong possibility of Alexander Hleb following in the near future another cup less season appears more and more costly for Arsenal. So can the Gunners continue the current good spell, end the season on a semi-high and show those thinking of jumping ship there’s more to come from the Gunners?

Portsmouth v Fulham: A Fighting Fulham Perfectly Mimic the Great Escape?

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Fulham’s destiny - yes the corny clichés are coming out in abundance on this appropriately dubbed Judgement Day - is ultimately in their own hands. Great results against Reading, Manchester City and Birmingham saw Fulham move out of the drop zone for the first time since Boxing Day. Question is can they pull out all the stops for one final time?

Bolton, Birmingham, Reading or Fulham – Relegation Beckons But For Which Two

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

The end of the season is nigh and what’s great is competition is still rife in all areas of the league. So with this in mind from now until D-Day, Judgement Day, Silverware Sunday - or whatever appropriately titled pun Sky Sports creatively(!) come up with - I am sticking my neck on the line (after looking at the stats mind) and predicting who’ll go down, who’ll lift the trophy and who’ll nap fifth place. Today - it’s the R word.

The Pools Poll: Will Newcastle Axe their Messiah?

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

It’s all well and good being honest but when it comes to honesty and football, there are certain lines that you just don’t cross. But Newcastle’s Kevin Keegan - never one to hold his tongue - once again appears completely oblivious to such lines.

Manchester City’s Owner is Punching Above his Weight; Try Taking a Look at Sunderland.

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Loyalty and football rarely go hand in hand nowadays. One mistake can be the difference between a manager remaining in charge or losing his job regardless of all the good he had done prior to that. These billionaire owners fail to recognise improvement, only seeing missed opportunities (and ultimately missed money). That’s exactly what’s happened down at Eastlands with Sven’s likely exit come May 11th. I think Dr. Shinawatra should take a leaf out of Niall Quinn’s book.

Liverpool v Manchester City: European Heartbreak Comes Back to Give Sven a Headache

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Liverpool’s season effectively ended last night after being knocked out of the Champions League, losing 4-3 to Chelsea on aggregate. So with the Reds playing solely for that proverbial pride, how much desire is there left in the tank?

Arsenal v Everton: Everton’s European Finish Gunned Down in Flames?

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

I by no means wish to sound patronising but I’m starting to really feel for Everton. For a long stretch of the season, they were strong contenders for fourth; now it’s possible they won’t even get fifth and that I feel would be a strong injustice.

Aston Villa v Wigan: Villa Set to Steal Fifth from Everton

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Villa’s draw with Everton last weekend means the race for fifth place is still well and truly on with Martin O’Neill’s in an excellent position. They may be trailing Everton; they may have missed the opportunity to grab that only European place by the neck but their two remaining fixtures are, on paper, considerably easier than Everton’s and they’d really fancy their chances in this encounter with Wigan.
