With the FA supporting Fifa’s Ruling 6+5 Rule, Would Benitez be Foolish to let Crouch leave Liverpool for Portsmouth Now?

“Bringing through more high-quality English players in the future is an absolute priority for the FA.” It may just be a proposal at the minute but with the FA in favour of further exploration into Sepp Blatter’s “six-plus-five” concept, Premier League clubs take note. We all know how time flies in football so managers really should start preparing for such an event. But does that mean holding on to what they have?
Jermain Defoe has been in the transfer news today. Not about a potential move for himself but how he is desperate for Liverpool striker Peter Crouch to join him at Fratton Park.
Crouch has only made 9 Premier League starts this season and has naturally grown more and more frustrated at his role at Anfield. Many expected him to go in January and when he didn’t many then hoped to see him drafted into the starting XI. A partnership with Torres, on paper, seems more than possible what with Crouch’s ability to meet the first ball and the Spaniard able to latch on any through ball. But alas, this was not the case with Rafa opting to develop a strong partnership between Torres and Gerrard instead.
So now a move for Crouch appeared all the more probable. But will Blatter’s proposal come into play at all? Would Benitez be better to keep hold and Crouch and start developing a partnership between the two natural strikers or, and bearing in mind Crouch is currently 27 (and will therefore be 31 should the proposal stick to the 2012/13 season), is Benitez right in selling him providing he uses the money to buy in younger English players - like Michael Johnson - that will be reaching their professional peak come 2012/13?
