When Tottenham allowed Dimitar Berbatov to be sold on the last day of the transfer window they expected to bring in a top class striker to replace him with Argentina’s Diego Milito the player in question. However, instead the target man moved to Serie A side Genoa leaving Tottenham in turmoil.

This week the New Football Pools pundit Tony Cascarino claimed Tottenham should pull out all the stops to sign Newcastle’s 32-year-old goalkeeper Shay Given to replace error-prone Heurelho Gomes in the Spurs goal. The former Republic of Ireland striker had this to say on the goalkeeping dilemma facing Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane, “Spurs brought in Gomes to replace Paul Robinson after he made numerous mistakes last season but seemingly nothing has changed. I know that Harry Redknapp has been strongly linked with Newcastle’s Shay Given and for me, he would be perfect for Tottenham”.

Arsenal were beaten again last weekend which seems to shock everyone, but it’s no surprise to me. The Gunners are simply not good enough at the moment. They are defensively feeble so they’ve got absolutely no chance of winning the title this season. They may have beaten United but they had to rely on the opposition missing a number of gilt-edged opportunities in doing so.

Plenty has been written about Tottenham’s Brazilian stopper Heurelho Gomes this season and after another horror show at Craven Cottage he will soon find himself on his way out in January. Spurs brought in Gomes to replace Paul Robinson after he made numerous mistakes last season but seemingly nothing has changed. I know that Harry Redknapp has been strongly linked with Newcastle’s Shay Given and for me, he would be perfect for Tottenham.

Many have asked why the Premier League is so close this season in terms of the number of points between clubs, well for me it’s a case of you’ve got the big four and then the rest. You only have to look at the teams that are considered to be the sides capable of breaking into the top four and already you can see it isn’t going to happen. The likes of Aston Villa and Manchester City don’t look anywhere near as strong as the usual big hitters.

Once more Harry Redknapp has shown what a great appointment he has been for Tottenham after picking up yet another win away at Man City at the weekend. Don’t get me wrong, they’ve been a bit fortunate along the way, after all, they were under the cosh against both Arsenal and Liverpool but managed to grab 4 points when they really should have had none. However, it’s important that they took advantage in those games as previously the team would have fallen apart in the same situation.

It has been scary to see just how much one man can change a club’s situation around so dramatically but that’s just what Harry Redknapp has done at Tottenham in a few short weeks. Harry seems to have an instant effect wherever he goes but if you’d told me a few weeks ago that Spurs would have drawn at Arsenal, beat Liverpool and then won at Man City then I would have laughed. The team was in a desperate state and it can’t just be that Harry goes around putting his arm around the players it must be more than that. After all, we may as well throw all these coaching badges and manuals away if that’s the case!
