Real Madrid and Man Utd will meet in Macedonia for the UEFA Super Cup, while back home, the Carabao Cup gets underway
We’ve taken a look at the games for Tuesday’s Soccer 6 coupon and said how we think they’ll play out to give you a little extra help in predicting the outcome
1 – Real Madrid V Man Utd
Champions League winners Real Madrid take on Europa League winners Manchester United in the UEFA Super Cup final in Macedonia, with both teams hoping to start their competitive season with a piece of silverware. It should hopefully have more spark than the dour friendly meeting in States last month, which finished in a 1-1 draw and a shambolic penalty shootout which saw seven from ten spot kicks missed. Cristiano Ronaldo was back in training after an extended holiday and could feature alongside Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema up front. Madrid may be favourites but Manchester United have had a solid pre-season with their only loss coming against Barcelona. Real Madrid win or draw.
2 – AFC Wimbledon v Brentford
The first round of League Cup matches takes place this week and League One’s AFC Wimbledon host Championship side Brentford. Both sides have had successful pre-seasons, with Wimbledon losing just one of their five friendlies and Brentford winning four and drawing two of their six warm-up games. At the weekend Wimbledon drew 1-1 visiting Scunthorpe in their opening League One game, while Brentford lost 1-0 to last season’s League One champions Sheffield United. These two last met in the League Trophy competition back in 2013 which Brentford won 5-3 at home. It could be another close encounter but this time Wimbledon could come out better. AFC Wimbledon home win or draw.
3 – Grimsby V Derby
Grimsby and Derby last met in this competition last year, with Derby getting a 1-0 win at home. The Championship side could repeat that success as they held Sunderland to a 1-1 draw in their first league match of the season in the Stadium of Light on Friday night. Grimsby won 3-1 visiting Chesterfield in their League Two opener but they were beaten 1-0 by Blackburn and drew 1-1 with Wigan in friendlies at home last month. Derby away win.
4 – Luton V Ipswich
Luton should be buoyed by their 8-2 drubbing of Yeovil at the weekend, that game saw them go 1-0 down before finishing the first-half 5-1 and continuing the onslaught after the break. They could potentially give Ipswich a decent game, the Tractor Boys started their Championship campaign with a 1-0 win hosting Birmingham on Saturday, but they were beaten 6-1 visiting Charlton Athletic in their final warm-up game at the end of last month. Draw or Ipswich away win.
5 – Wigan V Blackpool
The pair have met five times since August 2014, with Wigan having the better of the encounters with four wins and a loss. The Latics held on to their 1-0 win over MK Dons at the weekend, with both teams going down to ten men in a fairly even contest. Newly promoted Blackpool also had closely fought match in League One at the weekend but lost 2-1 visiting Bradford City. Wigan home win.
6 – Wycombe v Fulham
Both sides could only manage draws at the weekend, Wycombe drew 2-2 with newly promoted Lincoln in League Two, while Fulham couldn’t hold onto their 1-0 lead over Norwich and conceded two minutes from time in the Championship. Fulham have had a disappointing pre-season failing to win the last four of their five warm-up matches, but they tied with Newcastle and Norwich as the joint highest scoring teams in the Championship last season and should have too much for Wycombe. Fulham away win.
