After a weekend of third-round FA Cup action, teams from the Football League have to juggle another competition when third-round League Trophy fixtures take place on Tuesday night.
1 – Bury V Fleetwood
Fleetwood will feel buoyant for earning themselves a replay against Leicester in the FA Cup after a 0-0 draw with the Foxes on Saturday. The Cod Army are comfortably mid-table in League One so while there is no realistic chance of promotion, there’s no real threat of relegation either and this League Trophy tie shouldn’t be too much of a distraction. They also come against a woeful Bury side they’ve beaten twice in the league this season and who’ve lost their last six in a row without getting a goal. Fleetwood away win.
2 – Charlton V Oxford Utd
The teams had a 1-1 draw when they met at Oxford for a League One encounter in mid-October and this League Trophy match could be another stalemate. Charlton have had a rough month, they beat Oldham 1-0 in the league at the weekend to end a six-game run without a win. Oxford come into this after back to back wins over MK Dons and Blackpool, but have had less success on their travels lately with just two wins in their last eight on the road. Draw.
3 – Inverness CT V Falkirk
Both teams have had unremarkable runs in the Scottish Championship this season and only drew 0-0 when they met for the reverse fixture in October. Inverness managed a 1-0 win when they met in the Challenge Cup in November, but this time Falkirk come into the clash after a surprising 6-1 win over 2nd placed Dundee United on Saturday. They came from 1-0 down to dent Dundee’s title hopes and could get something against an Inverness side who’s only win in four was against lowly Brechin. Draw or Falkirk away win.
4 – Luton V Peterborough
Luton put in an energetic performance against Newcastle in the FA Cup at the weekend, but three goals in a 9-minute spell for the Toon Army saw Luton go out of the competition after a 3-1 loss. The home side are flying in League Two this season with 16 wins, 6 draws and 4 defeats putting them four points clear at the top of the table. They face a tough challenge from League One’s Peterborough, who were one of the success stories from the FA Cup this weekend after a 3-1 away win over Championship side Aston Villa. It was the third time the Posh have scored three goals in their last four on the road and they will surely get on the scoresheet again. Draw or Luton home win.
5 – Rochdale V Lincoln
Rochdale have had a terrible season in League One and languish in the relegation zone with just four wins in their twenty-five matches. However, they pulled off a surprise 1-0 away win over 11th placed Doncaster in the FA Cup at the weekend and will look to carry that momentum when hosting League Two’s Lincoln. Last season’s National League champions and FA Cup quarter-finalists have enjoyed a fruitful December and won six of their last eight matches, but they were beaten 4-2 visiting Luton on New Year’s Day. They can certainly present a challenge to a Rochdale side who must prove their weekend win wasn’t a fluke. Draw.
6 – Yeovil v Forest Green
One of Forest Green’s few League Two wins this term was their 4-3 victory over Yeovil back in August. It hasn’t gone well for them since and they teeter above the drop zone just two points from danger. A 1-0 win over Port Vale on Saturday may have restored some confidence, but the visitors had lost their previous six games on the bounce. Yeovil are also in danger of falling into the League Two drop zone, but they’ve avoided defeat in six of their last eight at home and won 2-0 hosting Bradford in the FA Cup on Saturday. Yeovil home win.
