The Scottish League Cup continues at the group stage with a round of mid-week fixtures. It’s the second season under the new format and there’s been some high-scoring matches over the weekend.
1 – Brechin V Forfar
Forfar earned themselves promotion after finishing in the runners-up spot of the Scottish League Two last season. There will be no league clash with their hosts in the coming season however, as Brechin achieved promotion to the Championship after success in the play-offs. This League Cup match will be their first meeting since the 2015/2016 season, where Brechin won three of their four clashes, including a 4-0 win on their home turf. Brechin suffered a 3-0 loss to Inverness at the weekend, but they’ve played more football over the last few months than their visitors. Forfar didn’t play at the weekend and their most recent a game was a 4-2 win over Highland Football League side Cover Rangers, in a friendly earlier this month. Brechin home win.
2 – Stirling A V Inverness CT
Gary Warren netted a brace in Inverness’ decisive 3-0 win over Brechin at the weekend and the visitors will look to carry that momentum into Wednesday’s match at Stirling. After finishing rock-bottom of the Premiership Inverness were relegated at the end of last season, but they should have two much for their hosts who were smashed 4-1 by Falkirk on Saturday. They were 3-0 down before the half-hour mark and that defeat makes it seven games on the bounce without a win for the Binos. Inverness away win.
3 – East Fife V Dunfermline
Dunfermline took themselves to the top of Group B after smashing Elgin City 6-0 at the weekend, with striker Nicky Clark bagging four of the goals. The visitors finished off last season with three wins from their final five Scottish Championship away games and should be more than capable of getting a result on this trip. League One’s East Fife limited their defeat to Peterhead on Saturday to just one goal, conceded in the first ten minutes. But that makes it four defeats in a row for the hosts and only one goal scored in that time. Dunfermline away win.
4 – Elgin V Hearts
Elgin have had little time to put their 6-0 humiliation from Dunfermline behind them, as they come up against Premiership side Hearts for their second group match in the Scottish League Cup this season. Hearts have played four friendlies this month, winning two and losing two, most recently losing out 2-1 to Newcastle United last Friday. Their last meeting with Elgin was in this competition in 2010. Hearts had a 4-0 win at and could achieve a similar score this time around. Hearts away win.
5 – Raith V Dundee FC
Raith were beaten 2-0 by Dundee United at the weekend and could be set for further disappointment, this time at the hands of Dundee FC. Raith have managed just one win in their last five matches, a 2-1 victory over Clyde in a friendly over a week ago. Dundee didn’t play a League Cup match at the weekend, but have played four pre-season friendlies this month. They lost 2-1 hosting Bolton Wanderers last Friday, but won three games on the road against St Mirren, Arbroath and Brechin. Dundee FC away win.
6 – Montrose v Ross County
Ross County have won each of their last eight meetings with Montrose, including a 1-0 win in the Scottish League Cup this time last year. Ross County can continue the trend against a vulnerable looking Montrose, who were smashed 4-0 by Hibernian in their first group match. After losing friendlies earlier this month, Montrose have now lost four on the spin and failed to score in the process. Ross County away win.
